This color image shows a rough, flat-lying exposure of reddish-brown rock with a hole surrounded by fine, newly ground dust. To the right of the hole is a flower-shaped arrangement of seven circles, one in the center and six around it.

The deepest hole drilled in a Martian rock was this one in August 2004, when Spirit ground 9 millimeters (1/3 inch) into the relatively unweathered interior and brushed dust away to create a flowerlike arrangement of circles nearby.
